President Trump’s return to the White House has been marked by a whirlwind of executive orders, sweeping policy changes, and high-profile firings. Yet, amid the intense pace of his second term, he has still carved out time for his love of sports.
In just the past month, Trump has pushed through a wave of executive actions, initiated mass layoffs across the federal government, and escalated tensions with U.S. allies through new tariff threats. But on weekends, he’s been spotted on the golf course, at the Super Bowl, and now, possibly, at the Daytona 500.
Sports and Politics Intertwined
Last weekend, Trump hit the golf course with Tiger Woods before making history as the first sitting president to attend a Super Bowl. This Sunday, reports suggest he may show up at the Daytona 500, a race he last attended in 2020 as grand marshal, just before the COVID-19 pandemic upended the nation.
Although the White House has not confirmed his plans, Trump is spending the weekend at Mar-a-Lago, his private Florida estate located roughly 200 miles from the Daytona International Speedway. Notably, the Federal Aviation Administration has issued “temporary flight restrictions for V.I.P. movement” in the area, signaling a possible visit. However, this year’s grand marshal is already set—actor Anthony Mackie, known for his role in Captain America: Brave New World.
A Week Blending Sports with Policy
Trump’s sports-filled schedule has often overlapped with his political agenda. Last Sunday morning, he played a round with Tiger Woods in Florida, as they worked on a proposed merger between the PGA Tour and the Saudi-backed LIV Golf circuit. Hours later, while aboard Air Force One, he signed a proclamation designating “Gulf of America Day,” reinforcing his controversial executive order renaming the Gulf of Mexico.
Before attending the Super Bowl that evening in New Orleans, he also met with families of victims of the New Year’s Day terror attack in the city.
If he does make an appearance at Daytona this Sunday, it would be the latest example of how Trump continues to blend politics, spectacle, and sports—keeping up a frenetic schedule while making sure his weekend activities still grab headlines.
